Assessments

Organisations are increasingly using assessment centres as a method for selecting candidates for vacancies. The types of exercises which are used at assessment centres will vary depending on the position to be filled and the organisation involved. However, assessment centres normally incorporate a mixture of tests and exercises including interviews, presentations, group exercises, and psychometric tests.

The advantage of assessment centres from a company's perspective is that it enables assessors to gather more objective information on applicants than would be possible from an interview alone.

If you are asked to attend an assessment centre by a prospective employer it is important:
  • To relax as much as possible on the day as this is when you will perform at your best
  • Not to panic if you perform badly on one of the assessments as the organisation will be looking at your overall performance on the day. However do be aware there might be certain assessments on which you need to obtain a minimum score in order to be considered for the role.
  • Turn up on time and ensure that you are well presented

Taking psychometric tests
There are a number of different assessments that an employer may use to ascertain your suitability for their vacancy. These include personality profiles and skills assessments. Find out more information or practise taking a psychometric test.
