The job
One of the first things to consider when thinking about a change of job or career is the aspects of your current role that you enjoy and those you dislike. Pull together a list of the tasks that you are responsible for in your current job, and rank them in terms of your preferences. It will help you to focus on what is important to you and what to look for in your next role. It's also important to remember that the grass is not always greener on the other side!

You should also identify the factors that will influence the type of job that you want to do. These may include salary, opportunities for growth and development, autonomy, status, contact with people or the qualities that are important to you in a boss.

Personal goals and values
Your own personal life goals are critical in deciding your next career move. Where do you want to be in five years time? How important is work/life balance? What are your own personal values? Would certain careers prevent you from upholding them?

Skills, experience and qualifications
When deciding on your next career move you also need to think about your skills, qualifications and experience. It's important to note that entry to certain professions is dependent upon a minimum standard of education. Think about the skills and experience that you have obtained through your career so far. Are they transferable to a different type of environment or job role?

The organisation
It's important to think about the type of organisation that you would like to work for. Factors like the industry type, whether it is private or public sector, the size of the business and its location are all important.

Finally a number of additional factors will help you decide whether the next career move is right for you.
Are you prepared to relocate?
Would you consider taking a temporary assignment before looking for a permanent appointment?
Are you prepared to study to obtain further qualifications?
