Getting Around
Everyone will tell you the traffic around Dublin is very heavy. You can expect traffic delays at peak travel times and in many areas around the suburbs. However, if you live in Dublin or in the suburbs surrounding the city you will find a number of transportation options other than a car.

Car
You will find a wide selection of new and used cars in Ireland. Nearly all cars have manual transmissions but you can find some used and new cars with an automatic transmission. These will be more expensive than those with a manual transmission. If you have an extended stay here you will need a licence. Any of the driving schools (see the Yellow Pages) can give you information on the process to get your licence.

Car insurance may be a challenge if you don’t have an Irish licence. If your spouse has obtained insurance through his/her company you may find it easier to get insurance for yourself with the same company. A road tax is required and it is due quarterly. You can also pay for this annually. To pay the road tax you can go to River House, Chancery Street, Dublin 7, (01) 872-0077 (Motor Tax Office) or the Nutgrove Shopping Centre in Rathfarnham.

DART
The DART is a rail service that runs along the coast from Greystones to Howth. You can connect to the regular train service for communities north of Dublin, right up to Belfast. The DART is most convenient if you live in or near the coastal areas. The DART stops running at 11:30pm. DART schedules are available at DART stations, or your local SPAR or newsagent.

Bus
Bus Atha Cliath, City Imp, and City Swift are bus services throughout Co. Dublin. The Night Link is a bus service that operates after the regular bus service and DART stop running. It runs from City Centre to Bray. Call Bus Atha Cliath for details.

Trains
Ireland has a railroad network across the country so you can take the train to every major city in the country. Many prefer this option because of the delays and traffic jams throughout the country. Look under Iarnrod Eireann in the white pages phone book for all the numbers you’ll need for information about rail travel.

Coach Service
Bus Eireann is a coach bus service to all major cities, and stops in villages, across Ireland. This can be a relaxing option to driving. See the white pages for the phone numbers for their various services.

Taxi/Hackney
Taxi and hackney service is also available. Hackney service is similar to taxi service but the cars are not marked and there is a difference in the licence. Hackney service is legal. It is arranged by phone and is usually slightly more expensive than a taxi.
