5 Reasons to Return to Your Previous Employer

Published on: 6 Apr 2017

Have you ever thought about being a boomerang employee? You may want to think about it.  What is a boomerang employee? Boomerang employees are people who have left a company and later rejoin that company again. A recent study found that employers are more and more willing to re-engage with people who have worked with them previously and left on good terms.

If you left on good terms, your re-entry may be easier than other job seekers which can make working for a previous employer again an attractive option. Here are a few of the benefits of being a boomerang employee:

1.You possibly have a contact that still works in the organisation and could refer you. Referrals are generally viewed as a good source of quality new hires which will give you a step up in the application process.

2.Depending on the amount of time it has been since you left the company, you may be able to find out who is hiring and contact them directly. Reach out through LinkedIn and re-introduce yourself and express your interest in the opportunity.

3.You already have knowledge of the culture within the organisation and can easily consider whether the department environment is one where you excel and will like working.

4.Your transition may be smoother as you will already have an understanding of the industry, the company’s values and focus.

5.You bring outside knowledge that you can quickly apply to the companies processes based on your prior experience with the company. You will more than likely have learned a thing or two on how other companies operate and can share best practices straight away due to your familiarity with the company.

Basically, don’t completely eliminate previous employers from your list of potential places of job opportunities. If you left on good terms it may just surprise you what opportunities now exist.
