Energy & Marine (E&M) is a business unit within the Marine Division of Babcock International Group. E&M Engineering is a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine, system engineering, electrical engineering design and project support services to the marine and defence markets worldwide. We have vast experience in engineering, construction, concept design and through life support for a wide range of front line naval and auxiliary support vessels.

The Division is expanding rapidly with complex, high-profile defence projects including Type 31 Frigate Design & Build Programme and the Successor Programme as well as providing engineering services to the UK Surface Ship and Submarine fleet. Therefore, we are looking to grow our existing team, building on a well-established foundation of over 700 staff across the UK.

The Type 31 Project will deliver 5 general purpose, global, adaptable and exportable frigates to the Royal Navy designed to undertake a range of operational tasks from maritime security, humanitarian aid and disaster relief and defence engagement to operation in a high threat environment. The Project is the pathfinder and cornerstone of the National Shipbuilding Strategy and will be delivered in an innovative manner at pace with all 5 ships to be in-service by Dec 2028.

Main Purpose

We are looking for a Spares Range and Scale Engineer responsible for the Initial Provisioning List and developing this into a view for the longer-term creation of the range and scale of spares to be captured in the Consolidated Allowance List (CAL) for the Type 31 Programme. The process will require an understanding of provisioning analysis to assess failure rates from an engineering perspective, and maintenance task analysis to identify spares required for maintenance. The role will be closely aligned with the Supply Support Lead and require an effective relationship to be established and maintained with the Supply Chain.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical input (provisioning and maintenance task analysis) to Initial Provisioning Ranging and Scaling
  • Analyse the content of the IPL and develop the range and scale of spares required to support and maintain T31 availability
  • Understand the scope of the Initial Provisioning List of spares and liaise with the ILS Supply Support Lead and Supply Chain to ensure the IPL is scheduled and delivered iaw the contract
  • Develop the Range and Scale of spares to enable initial population of a Consolidated Allowance List (CAL)
  • Contribute to the delivery of broader supportability outputs as defined in the T31 Design and Build contract and as directed by the Supportability Analysis Lead or T31 Head of Supportability
  • Support Supportability and Design Reviews

What do I need to do the role?

You will be Degree or HNC qualified in an engineering discipline (mechanical, marine, electrics/electronics or systems) or relevant experience. Ideally, you will be an Incorporated Engineer or working towards Incorporated status.

You will have experience in ILS and understanding and awareness of the IPL and CAL in relation to the Ranging and Scaling of spares to support the maintenance of a capability. Sound understanding of ILS Defence Standards (00-600, 00-40, 00-42, 00-44, 00-45 and 00-49).

You will have the ability to work in a complex, multi-discipline team. Strong written communication skills; the delivery of well-structured, unambiguous technical documentation and reports. Strong verbal communication skills and sound understanding of ship systems and equipment.

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving 'Security Check' (SC) clearance
