What do you do on a daily basis?
Currently I am working within the Auto Transmission department as a part of my third rotation on the graduate scheme. The role focusses on the design and release of gear shifters for auto transmission vehicles. A typical day at work would involve discussing engineering design and decision making with the suppliers, core Engineers and cross-functional teams, to ensure the required product and specifications are up to standard, while ensuring the commodity price is within the target.

How did you get into your role?
I joined the company in 2015 as a Graduate Engineer. The graduate role includes 3, 8 month placements. I believe the graduate scheme is efficiently tailored. The rotations within the scheme give you exposure to different areas of business, allowing you to develop different skills while building a strong work network.

What did you study at university and how has this helped you in your role?
I did my Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering and Master Degree in Automotive Systems Engineering. This helped me to understand basic automotive concepts which enabled me to apply critical thinking and logical reasoning into challenges that I come across in the day-to-day job.

What do you enjoy most about working in your sector?
Developing an automotive commodity needs to involve cross-functional discussions with various teams. The system engineering approach is applied in everyday business. Ensuring the different components and sub components are integrated to produce a fully functional vehicle is challenging but, at the same time, a rewarding experience. I enjoy being involved in important design decision-making processes, which makes sure the integration is smooth, efficient and robust, for both the company and customers.

What's the hardest part of your role?
The major focus of business is to deliver quality products at a low cost. It is quite a challenge when it comes to product quality and costs, where we have to find that optimum design which meets the safety standards while satisfying or exceeding our customers' expectations.

How has your role developed?
Ever since joining as a Graduate Engineer, I have enjoyed taking my knowledge and skills to the next level. The job role has evolved from being a spectator to an actively contributing member.

Any advice for others wanting to do this job?
Do you dream of working as a part of a global team who respects diversity? Do you want the challenge of satisfying customers with quality, cost effective products? Do you have the potential to "go further" to chase your dream career? If the answer is yes, this is your chance.

What do you most enjoy about being a Ford employee?
Ford has been listed as one of the world's most ethical companies for the past eight years consecutively. It uplifts the importance of engineering ethics; you will never be discriminated against because of your inexperience, and everyone's opinion counts for developing efficient automobiles for the general public. I enjoy being part of this wonderful global diverse community.
